FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE DEVASTATION IN PUERTO RICO.

-

1 JUST AS IMPORTANT AS NFL

President Donald Trump insisted Tuesday that he was not preoccupied with his fight with the NFL over the weekend at the expense of stormravaged Puerto Rico. Trump was accused of devoting too much time to the fight over football players kneeling during the national anthem. He said he was sending “America’s hearts and prayers” to people in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and he will visit both places next week.

2 MORE AID FROM WASHINGTON

The U.S. federal government will now pick up 100 per cent of the costs of debris removal and other emergency assistance provided to Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria, Trump announced Tuesday as part of an amendment to his earlier disaster declaration. U.S. states and territories typically cover 25 per cent of the costs, with the federal government paying the remaining 75 per cent.

3 PLUS $1M FROM J.LO

Jennifer Lopez has pledged $1 million toward hurricane relief efforts. The 48-yearold Lopez was born in New York to Puerto Rican parents. She said Sunday that she still had family on the island that she had yet to hear from.

4 SINGER WORRIED ABOUT BROTHER

Singer Ricky Martin is worried about a brother who lives in the U.S. territory, he said in a video posted on Instagram. “I am very worried because I haven’t been able to get in touch … We don’t know where he is.”

5 THERE’S A FOOD SHORTAGE

More than 3.4 million citizens still lack adequate food, water and fuel five days after Maria pounded the island, and officials said electrical power may not be fully restored for more than a month. Most food stores remain closed; shops that were open Monday had long lines outside and vast empty shelves inside.
