Infighting roils Metis council executive
President says treasurer has quit, but she denies it
The Metis Nation — Saskatchewan (MN—S) has accepted the resignation of its treasurer, but she’s refuting the claim, saying she has no intention to resign.
On Monday, the MN—S distributed a press release explaining the Provincial Metis Council “acknowledges the resignation” of its treasurer, Mary Ann Morin.
In the release, MN — S president, Glen McCallum thanks Morin for her “contributions to the Metis Nation” and that he “wishes her well” in her future endeavours.
However, Morin argues no such resignation has been submitted.
In a press release issued Tuesday, Morin said she is working her way through the legal system and as a result, “can’t say too much,” but noted she has been talking to elders and seeking council.
“The motion was passed and I know it will have to be confirmed through the court system that I have not submitted a letter of resignation. But until then I know through the voters that I am still responsible to the position of Treasurer of Metis Nation-Saskatchewan,” Morin said in the release.
On Wednesday, McCallum said he’s not sure why Morin is saying she hasn’t resigned, as a letter of resignation was submitted to council. “She can do whatever she wants,” he said when asked about Morin’s claims to media saying she didn’t resign, adding that he wishes her all the best in her future endeavours.
Morin is now calling on members of the MN — S who are concerned to write members of council to “let them know accountability is the key aspect we are looking for.”
Morin was elected to the position of treasurer on May 27 following the MN — S election after she defeated two other candidates seeking the position. The MN — S election held in May was the first time members voted in five years.
I have not submitted a letter of resignation.
