We don’t need NAFTA — we need the SSP

- Alan Ashcroft, Courtenay, B.C.

So Donald Trump wants to renegotiate NAFTA. What is going to come of this is anyone’s guess, but I have a suggestion for which direction in which we ought to head.

Let’s write a new chapter in Canada-U.S.-Mexico relations. Instead of “free trade,” which has secretive clauses limiting the role of democratically elected governments to protect that which needs protecting — namely cultural and environmental treasures — let’s craft what I call the Strategic Stewardship Partnership.

All the pieces are falling into place, if you just take the time to look closely. We are being afforded the opportunity to build a sunny, peaceful planet — with the stepping-stones of national and community identities coexisting with the interactions of business actors.

It is unfortunate (but not too late to remedy) that the major media does not report the best things that are occurring on a very large scale. Technology is, increasingly, playing second fiddle to the heart. People are turning away from technologies that harm us or limit our spiritual growth.

Citizens just want to own that what is necessary for happiness, and are learning that the exterior environment mirrors what is deep inside us.

So in the days and months ahead, please reflect deeply on what you want the world to look like, and let’s get involved in encouraging our “leaders” to live merrily and do what is right!

And remember — think SSP.
