Courtney Hufsmith wins women’s Sled Dog Open
Coming in almost two full minutes ahead of the runner-up, Courtney Hufsmith claimed the top spot at the annual Sled Dog Open crosscountry event on Saturday.
Hufsmith, a second-year business student with the University of Saskatchewan women’s team, finished the eight-kilometre race with a time of 30 minutes and 54 seconds. It’s her second win this season. She won the Cougar Trot in Regina earlier in September.
The Huskies took fourth-place overall in the women’s team rankings.
On the men’s side, Russell Pennock, of the University of Calgary Dinos, won the 8 km event in 26.04 to earn first place. Saskatchewan’s lone men’s competitor, Stefano Zanotto, finished 40th with a time of 30.15.
The Saskatchewan men’s and women’s soccer teams walked off the soccer pitch Sunday both having tied their Alberta counterparts.
In men’s action, the Huskies (74-1) kept the Golden Bears (7-1-2) out of their own net, but weren’t able to score any goals of their own, leaving the score 0-0.
The men’s team also held off the MacEwan University Griffins (2-71) 4-0 on Thursday. The game was goalkeeper Patrick Pranger’s fifth shutout of the season.
Meanwhile, the women’s team played the Pandas (5-1-2) to a 1-1 tie. Rebecca Weckworth scored the Huskies (4-2-2) lone goal, while Brenna Mattiello had the single point for Alberta.
On Saturday, the women’s team lost 2-0 to the Mount Royal University Cougars (4-2-2).
Saskatoon’s Badgers rugby club ensured the provincial championship trophy stayed in Saskatoon on Saturday, defeating the Regina Rogues 32-12.
The two teams were close at half — the Badgers leading only 10-5 — but three tries and a penalty kick in the second half propelled the Badgers to the win.
In the women’s final, down 41-15 to Regina to start the second half, Saskatoon’s Kirin scored four tries in an attempt at a comeback. Unfortunately, the attempt fell just short as they lost 46-40. Postmedia News
