FIELD GUIDE PREVIEW
Field Guide features dozens of artists from Saskatchewan, Canada and international destinations. The gallery’s director of programs and chief curator Sandra Guimaraes touches on a few highlights.
Robert Boyer, Imagio Pietatis
— A New Wave for Ozone, 1990
This work is from the Mendel collection by the late Indigenous artist from Saskatchewan. “This is a work we had in mind because he is a major Indigenous artist and what we consider one of our highlights in our collection,” said Guimaraes. The piece was selected by artists Tanya and Duane Linklater to use in their project Determined by the River. “This is one of the most important works they have selected. It’s a very powerful work. I was interested in showing that work even if they wouldn’t have selected it.”
Stan Douglas,
The Secret Agent, 2015
“This a major work by a major Canadian artist from Vancouver. I have been following him and presented his work in a group show in Porto. I have been interested in Canadian artists for many years, not because they were Canadian but because they were very good artists. This work is an
immersive installation with six video screens. The installation is about 58 minutes. This work is really interesting because it’s one of the biggest installations Douglas ever done and it’s never been shown in Canada ... He was inspired by a novel by Joseph Conrad. He has put that story in a different context, the aftermath of the Carnation revolution in Portugal.” Douglas will attend the opening.
Althea Thauberger,
The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Charenton Asylum Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, 2012
“This is also a work from our collection. It’s important for us to continue following the work of middle career artists or younger. Althea Thauberger is a very challenging artist. She is from Saskatchewan. We acquired this work, an installation with a film, in 2014. This work will be presented in what we call a second chapter. In one of the galleries we will start with the
presentation of another artwork and in January it will change.”
Ryan Gander,
An attempt at a facsimile of Pablo Picasso’s Portrait de Jeune Fille, d’après Cranach le Jeune II, (1958), 2017
“Ryan Gander was challenged to select the Picassos. Not only that but he has also done his own drawings in an attempt to be Picasso. We have done a publication titled Picasso and that will be launched with the museum ... This is what I consider the first artist book that we are launching with our opening. We will launch also a catalogue that goes along with our Field Guide exhibition. Gander chose 142 of Picasso’s linocuts, all portraits, to be displayed for the opening. I was so touched when I saw the first wall being installed. It’s just amazing. I’m super happy and proud of being able to work with Ryan Gander and doing this at Remai Modern. What will be done there will be amazing and I know it can only be seen here.”
