New homes sought for dogs found roaming around Mount Royal

The Saskatoon SPCA is ready to start the adoption process for eight dogs found earlier this month roaming the Mount Royal neighbourhood.

When the dogs were first located on Oct. 10, the SPCA was focused on attempting to locate the owner, but with no viable leads — and a continuing investigation by animal protection officers underway — staff and volunteers want to find stable, loving homes for the animals as soon as possible.

“We’re not really sure at this point if we’re going to be able to locate the previous owner,” said SPCA education and public relations coordinator Jasmine Hanson.

“But, we are not under obligation to return the dogs to their owner at this point, because we held them for the period we normally do for any owner to come forward and claim them.”

When the dogs were first brought in, they were in such rough shape that, before they could be properly examined, all eight needed emergency grooming. Once they were sufficiently cleaned up, most required dental work and one even needed eye surgery.

“My colleague was taking photos at the time and she said it was a quite unfortunate thing to see when they first came in,” Hanson said. “Now, we’re just in the midst of getting (the remaining surgeries) figured out for these little guys — they are the sweetest dogs ever.”

One of the dogs has already found a home and two more are on the adoption floor.

The main focus now is to finish up any remaining procedures on the final five pooches and get them into new homes as soon as possible. Hanson said anyone interested in adopting a shih-tzu/ poodle cross should watch the SPCA website.
