Remembrance Day: Show your support

-

As Remembrance Day approaches we need to consider its significance. Saskatoon has the proud history of hosting one of, if not the largest, indoor Remembrance Day ceremonies in Canada; in other words, we have a history of supporting our veterans.

Canada came of age when our young men put us on the map demonstrating their valour.

Flanders Fields, Vancouver Corner, Passchendaele and of course the Vimy Memorial are all reminders of their bravery and sacrifice. There is still a ceremony to honour the war dead every evening at the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium.

Our military, serving and retired, have and continue to support us in many world conflicts, and we need to support them.

The role of the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) is to support and advocate for veterans of the military, RCMP, municipal police and firefighters. RCL advocates for veterans’ benefits and for the well-being of veterans and their families. Veterans served to protect the rights and freedoms we enjoy today, and the RCL is committed to ensuring those veterans receive the care and supports they deserve.

I encourage you to join us in honouring our veterans Nov. 11 at the Remembrance Day ceremony at SaskTel Centre and then at one of the many service clubs in our city. RCL Branch 362 will have food, live music and dancing in our annual tradition of commemoration. Come shake the hand of a veteran and let them know their service has not and will not be forgotten. Bill Flahr, Saskatoon
