U of S women’s hockey look to rebound after pair of losses

Their view from the top was shortlived, but they liked what they saw.

Now, the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies women’s hockey team would like to get back on top of the Canada West conference standings.

They’re back on home ice this weekend as they host the Mount Royal University Cougars from Calgary in Canada West games Friday and Saturday night. Game-time is 7 p.m. at Rutherford Rink.

After a pair of losses last weekend in Edmonton to the University of Alberta Pandas, the Huskies fell from first place to fourth place in the Canada West standings with a 7-4-1-0 record.

With three points awarded for a win in regulation, only four points separate first place Manitoba Bisons (9-3-0-0, 26 points) and fourth-place Huskies (22 points). Alberta (8-2-0-0, 24 points) and British Columbia (8-4-0-0, 24 points) are tied for second.

Emily Upgang (five goals and three assists), Kaitlin Willoughby (four goals and four assists) and Bailee Bourassa (four goals and two assists) are among the top 20 scorers in the conference.

Goalie Chloe Marshall has a 4-10-0 record, 1.41 goals-against average and .937 save percentage.

MEN’S HOCKEY

In Canada West men’s hockey, the U of S Hockey Dogs are in Calgary to play the Mount Royal Cougars. Saskatchew­an (9-2-10), second in the Canada West, is currently ranked No. 3 nationally in U Sports men’s hockey. Mount Royal (6-5-0-1) sits fifth overall in the Canada West.

WRESTLING

The U of S wrestling squads are set to host a dual meet against the visiting University of Alberta this weekend, Friday and Saturday, at the Education Gym on campus.

Saskatchew­an’s men placed first and its women second among Canadian teams this past weekend at the Regina Cougar Invitation­al.

Rookie wrestler Trevor Bannerman was named male wrestler of the meet after finishing first in the 72-kilo weight class. Other gold medallists included Alex Schell (48-kg), Jacob Fritz (61-kg), Ayobami Peluola (65-kg) and Tyler Bently (82-kg).

Saskatchew­an is ranked No. 4 nationally for men’s wrestling and No. 6 for women’s.

VOLLEYBALL

The U of S volleyball teams play host to the Mount Royal Cougars this weekend at the PAC on campus. Game time is 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men). Saskatchew­an comes in with a 3-5 record in Canada West women’s play. Mount Royal is 4-4. The Huskie men (06) are still searching for their first Canada West conference win of the season. Mount Royal comes in with a 2-6 record.

BASKETBALL

The Huskie hoops teams are both in Edmonton to play the Pandas and Golden Bears, respective­ly,

Saskatchew­an is ranked No. 6 in U Sports women’s basketball. The Huskies are a perfect 6-0 in Canada West women’s play this season, second only to the Lethbridge Pronghorns (8-0). The Alberta Pandas are 5-1.
