THE BEACHES

When: Nov. 25

Where: O’Brians Event Centre

What: The members of fourpiece rock band The Beaches have been playing together since their early teens. Made up of sisters Jordan and Kylie Miller and Eliza Enman-McDaniel and Leandra Earl, the Toronto group just released its debut album Late Show. Their PR team describes it as “a little bit glam rock and a little bit garage.” Their influences include David Bowie, the Strokes and St. Vincent (all of whom are ace in my books). Late Show was produced by Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw of Metric, which is also a good sign. The band is opening for Death From Above 1979 on its current tour.

NEW CONSTELLATIONS

When: Nov. 23

Where: Broadway Theatre

What: Is it just me or has the Broadway Theatre been killing it lately? I feel like there’s so much to do and see at our community theatre. I just spent most of the weekend there checking out movies at the Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival. Prior to that, I dressed up as Frank-n-Furter for their always sold-out screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (no big deal but I was totally one of the finalists for the costume contest). This week, the Broadway is hosting a cool and unique event called New Constellations. The tour brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists for shows that include both music and literary artists. Saskatoon’s date kicks off the 13-date tour and includes music from July Talk, Jason Collett, Mob Bounce, Jeremy Dutcher, Elisapie and Safia Nolin. Spoken word will be performed by Jordan Abel, Louise Halfe and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson. The press release for the event calls it an “unprecedented celebration of the Indigenous Next Wave.”

TYLER GILBERT

When: Nov. 24

Where: Prairie Ink Restaurant

What: ’Tis the season to curl up with a good book. If you’re like me you’re long overdue for a trip to the bookstore to stock up (I can’t keep re-reading Harry Potter ... even though I probably will). A nice bonus to stopping by McNally Robinson is live music in their Prairie Ink Cafe. Saskatchewan/Montana singer-songwriter is performing in the cosy venue this week. Gilbert is from Regina and is touring in support of his most recent album The Montana Kid. Show starts at 8 p.m.
