Dogs earn nine wrestling medals

Three gold, one silver and six bronze the prize count at Huskie Open

Three gold, one silver and six bronze was the overall medal haul for the University of Saskatchew­an men’s and women’s wrestling teams after they hosted the Huskie Open on Saturday.

Josh Bodnarchuk, a four-time Canada West gold medallist, secured gold in the men’s 61 kilogram, while Alex Schell and Taylor Follensbee won gold in the women’s 48kg and 82kg divisions, respective­ly.

Also on the women’s side, Laryssa Barry (59kg) claimed the Huskies’ lone silver medal, while Ali McPhee (67kg) earned bronze. The final five bronze medals belonged to the men’s Ayobami Peluola (65kg), Trevor Bannerman (72kg), Hunter Lee (90kg), Noah Bertholet (100kg) and Kalin Langford (120kg).

BASKETBALL

Visiting the University of Alberta Pandas (5-3) on the weekend, the Huskie women’s team (8-0) improved their winning streak to eight games with wins of 85-61 on Friday and 60-48 on Saturday.

Unfortunat­ely for the Huskie men (2-6), they dropped both of their games to undefeated Alberta (8-0), losing 78-65 on Friday and 100-54 on Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL

In front of a hometown crowd this weekend, the Huskies men’s team (2-8) earned their first wins of the season defeating the Mount Royal University Cougars (2-8) in backto-back games, winning Friday 3-1 and Saturday 3-0.

The women’s team (4-6), meanwhile, split their series against the Cougars (5-5), losing 3-1 on Friday, but coming back to win 3-2 on Saturday.

HOCKEY

Saskatchew­an’s men’s team (112-1-0-0) improved their winning streak to three games with a pair of victories over MRU (6-7-0-0-1) on the weekend, defeating the host 3-2 on Friday and 4-1 on Saturday.

In women’s action, the Huskies (8-5-1-0-0) lost 2-0 on Friday to MRU (4-10-0-0-0), but flipped the score on Saturday, earning a shut out of their own 2-0.
