SATURDAY NIGHT ROCKERS YUKON BLONDE BACK IN TOWN

- STEPHANIE MCKAY YUKON BLONDE smckay@postmedia.com Twitter.com/spstephmckay

When: Dec. 1

Where: O’Brians Event Centre What: Cold puppy noses and gettin’ a good sit in, semi-precious metals and nice clothes I fit in. Wearing one overall strap, is that still a thing? These are a few of my favourite things. It’s December and people have decided (for a reason I still don’t totally understand) that this Sound of Music classic — with its original lyrics — is a Christmas song. That means it’s been in my head since Nov. 12. Another of my favourite things? The song Saturday Night and the band who sings it. Yukon Blonde is coming through town once more. The band hasn’t released a full album since 2015’s On Blonde, but they recently teamed up with Steve Bays from Hot Hot Heat for the songs Crazy and Emotional Blackmail. Based on that, I’m looking forward to more new tunes. Rural Alberta Advantage is also on the bill. Their new album The Wild came out in October.

WOLFCOP

When: Dec. 1

Where: Scotiabank Theatre Saskatoon

What: But Stephanie, WolfCop is a movie not a concert! I know this, but I don’t want to miss an opportunity to give a shout-out to awesome local band Shooting Guns. The band returned to create the score/soundtrack for the made-in-Saskatchewan movie’s sequel. Anyone who has followed the local film industry since cuts were made to funding knows this is no small feat. The band encourages people to pack the 7:30 p.m. screening on Dec. 1. WolfCop 2 includes a return performance by Saskatchewanborn actor Amy Matysio and a new character played by Yannick Bisson from Murdoch Mysteries. Kevin Smith even makes a cameo. If you can’t make it Friday be sure to check your local theatre for alternate show times.

A TRIBE CALLED RED

When: Nov. 30

Where: O’Brians Event Centre What: If you’ve been waiting on checking out A Tribe Called Red in the live environment, now’s the time to get acquainted. The DJ collective is doing something unique in the music world, both sonically and as activists and ambassadors for Indigenous people. Going to an ATCR show is an experience every music lover should have. The band has a unique ability to break down barriers, deliver strong messages and be fun and danceable at the same time. The group recently collaborated with the newest Polaris Music Prize winner Lido Pimienta for the song The Light Pt. II. The video for the track was filmed in Chile and stars Chilean artists, creatives and activists. The group’s latest album is We Are The Halluci Nation. It was shortlisted for the Polaris.
