BLACK DRESS SHORTAGE Sunday night’s Golden Globes awards in Beverly Hills was the most prominent of the protests against misogyny that have swept through Hollywood since the allegations of sex abuse against Harvey Weinstein and others were exposed. And a little black dress fast became the mustwear item of the night, to be worn in protest at abuse in the industry. But it seems there just weren’t enough black outfits to go around.

LAST-MINUTE SHIPMENTS Designers and stylists were in a last-minute frenzy, some having more black attire rushed in from New York. One stylist, who dresses Mariah Carey, said: “We are all fighting for the same black dresses.” Andre Walker, Oprah Winfrey’s hair stylist for over 30 years, said: “It’s incredibly stressful.”

MEANINGFUL GUESTS

Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Emma Watson and Amy Poehler were just a few of the actresses who were to bring gender and racial justice activists as their guests.

HEAVY SECURITY Security of all kinds lined the scene Sunday. Motorcycle officers cruised down the red carpet. A sniper in military attire put a large rifle on a tripod on a low rooftop of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

NO UNANIMITY Among those rumoured to be considering not wearing black were Sarah Jessica Parker and Alicia Vikander. “There are some people who think there is no such thing as bad publicity. I don’t think there should be any judgment,” Walker said.
