SKATING, ART, POLKA FUN
You’ve had a couple weeks to recover from new year celebrations. Why not venture out and see what Saskatoon has to offer this weekend? Here are five ideas:
1.
BRIT basketball finals Saskatoon’s most iconic basketball tournament has hit the half-century mark. The 50th annual BRIT runs all weekend. Semifinals are Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., with the championship to be decided Saturday night at 9 p.m.
2.
Celebrate art at LUGO
LUGO is back. The annual fundraiser took a year off, but the now-open Remai Modern provides a perfect venue for its rebirth.
With installations and performances from many disciplines, this is a must-attend event for Saskatoon’s creative community. Doors open Saturday night at 8 p.m.
3.
Outdoor skating in the Bowl This is the first weekend since the grand opening of the new outdoor skating rink in the Bowl at the University of Saskatchewan. Strap on some blades and show Mother Nature a little cold can’t keep you away.
4.
Farm toy collectibles galore
If, on the other hand, you’re content to let Mother Nature take this round, head to the German Cultural Centre for the Saskatoon Farm Toy & Collectible Show. Featuring items new and old, this show should satisfy any collector of agricultural kitsch. Runs Friday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
5.
Ring in Ukrainian New Year Finally, if one New Year celebration wasn’t enough, head to Dakota Dunes Saturday night for Malanka — Ukrainian New Year Celebration. A Ukrainian buffet, traditional dancing and a polka performance by the Western Masters will keep you entertained while you look ahead to the next 12 months.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the show at 8 p.m.
