THIS SHOW HOME’S A WINNER
Luxurious mid-century design dazzles as Hospital Home Lottery’s grand prize
The list of features is impressive: 5,500 square feet, 18-foot kitchen island, seating for 20 at the dining room table, three-car garage, four bedrooms, six bathrooms, three covered decks, an indoor gym, a custom wine room, two family rooms, and more.
But this spectacular $1.7 million Hospital Home Lottery grand prize show home at 312 Greenbryre Cres. N. is much more than the sum of its parts when you see it in person.
First, it is the largest grand prize ever offered by the Hospital Home Lottery. There is a desire immediately to discover every nook and to explore the outdoor landscape from every window, balanced with a desire to linger — whether it’s at the window seat in the hallway or the fireplace in the living room.
The focus on wood and neutral tones makes it seem as though the home is simply part of the beautiful natural surroundings in Greenbryre Estates.
Arla Gustafson, CEO of the Royal University Hospital Foundation describes the home as “relevant” and the decor as “prairie modern.” In fact, the colouring and midcentury modern design reminds Gustafson of the late American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
“I’m a huge fan of Frank Lloyd Wright and I have toured many Frank Lloyd Wright homes when I’ve been around North America,” Gustafson explains. “And if one stands in some of the windows and looks at the vista I think Frank Lloyd Wright would be very jealous of this environment to build in.”
Haven Builders’ design manager Charissa Surine says the unique esthetic of the home was inspired by a lot of late nights studying classic mid-century houses. The large windows low to the ground and walnut wood panelling throughout definitely will evoke a modern mid-century feel. In the lower level, a family room looks like a classic ode to the time period with a planter box along the stairs.
“People walk through and are wowed,” says Surine. “It’s a lot to take in. It’s a design that appeals to a lot of people. It’s so classic it never goes out of style.”
One of her favourite features of the home is the cedar panelling from Vancouver Island on the 14foot ceilings in the kitchen, living room and dining room.
The lottery is a key fundraiser for all three hospital foundations — RUH Foundation, St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation and City Hospital Foundation. Last year the lottery raised $3 million for various projects at each of the hospitals.
“(The lottery) is something we count on to support what the medical teams need to advance patient care. It’s a huge part of our annual budget,” says Gustafson.
The grand prize show home will be awarded with $25,000 cash. Other prizes are available. Bonus draw deadline is midnight Feb. 16.
