Huskies lead in conference semifinal

- KEVIN MITCHELL

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies started fast in their Canada West women’s basketball semifinal.

The Huskies dumped the visiting Trinity Western Spartans 75-62 Thursday night at the PAC, giving them a 1-0 lead in their best-ofthree playoff series. Game 2 goes Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Game 3, if necessary, Saturday at the same time.

The Huskie men’s hockey team hosted the Calgary Dinos in the opener of their best-of-three Canada West semifinal Thursday night, but that game was still underway at press-time.

Over at the PAC, Sabine Dukate — who earlier in the day was named a Canada West first team all-star — netted 23 points for the Huskies, and Megan Ahstrom scored nine.

Sarah Buckingham scored 15 points for Trinity Western.

The Huskies had two Canada West all-stars named Thursday; the other is Summer Masikewich, who made the second team.

On the men’s side, Huskies’ guard Lawrence Moore was named to the conference second team.

Three playoff semifinals are on tap this weekend in Saskatoon. The men’s hockey playoff resumes Friday and Saturday (if necessary), with both contests slated for 7:30 p.m. at Rutherford Rink.

The Huskie women’s hockey team is hosting British Columbia in a best-of-three semifinal that runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. each day.
