McMorris, Coakwell ready for their moments

Regina snowboarde­r Mark McMorris is hoping to ascend to new heights in the big air competitio­n.

McMorris will continue his pursuit of his first Winter Olympics gold medal Friday night, when the men’s big air final is held in Pyeongchan­g, South Korea.

The 24-year-old already has two Olympic bronze medals to his credit. He was third in men’s slopestyle in 2014 and 2018. Big air is making its Olympic debut in 2018.

McMorris has won seven gold medals at the X Games, including three in big air.

Moose Jaw’s Ben Coakwell will compete in men’s four-man bobsled heats on Friday and Saturday. Heats begin at 6:30 p.m. both days.

Canada’s men’s curling team, including Regina-born lead Ben Hebert, lost 5-3 to the United States in a semifinal Thursday.

Hebert, skip Kevin Koe, third Marc Kennedy and second Brent Laing surrendere­d a crucial steal of two to John Shuster’s team in Thursday’s eighth end.

Team Canada will play in Friday ’s bronze-medal match against Switzerlan­d’s Peter de Cruz.

Hebert is pursuing his second Olympic medal. He won a gold medal in 2010 while curling with Kevin Martin.

Emily Clark of Saskatoon won a silver medal Thursday, when the United States posted a 3-2 shootout victory over Canada in the women’s hockey final.

The Canadian roster also included Brigitte Lacquette of Mallard, Man., who has family ties to Cote First Nation, near Yorkton. Lacquette once represente­d the Yorkton Tribal Council at the Saskatchew­an First Nations Winter Games.

Canada’s Meaghan Mikkelson was born in Regina but grew up in Alberta.

Canada’s men’s hockey team, including Linden Vey of Wakaw, meets Germany in a semifinal Friday at 6:10 a.m. The men’s hockey final is slated for Saturday at 10:10 p.m.
