Skier Oatway of Regina wins gold at Paralympic­s

Kurt Oatway, a member of the Regina Alpine Adaptive Ski Club, won a gold medal Sunday at the 2018 Winter Paralympic­s in Jeongseon, South Korea. The 34-year-old Oatway previously studied at the University of Saskatchew­an and competed for Team Saskatchew­an at the 2011 Canada Winter Games. He posted a time of 1:25.83 seconds in the men’s super-G — sitting, placing 1.06 seconds ahead of silver medallist Andrew Kurka, from the United States.

Prince Albert’s Brittany Hudak finished eighth in the women’s 6-km standing biathlon at the Paralympic­s on Saturday. The 24-year-old, competing in her second Paralympic­s, finished with a calculatio­n time of 19:22.6. Winner Ekaterina Rumyantsev­a had a calculatio­n time of 17:06.1. Hudak will also compete in the women’s 7.5km standing cross-country event next Saturday.

HUSKIES WIN NATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD MEDALS

The University of Saskatchew­an Huskies finished with three gold and four bronze at the U Sports track and field championsh­ip in Windsor. The Huskies women’s team finished fifth in the standings with 53.5 points while the men were 13th with 18 points.

Huskie gold medal winners were Olena Olenick in women’s weight throw with an 18.85-metre toss, Julie Labach in the 1,000-metre women’s race in a time of 2:43.96, and Kieran Johnston with 5,259 points in the men’s heptathlon.

Labach added a 600-metre bronze in 1:29.81. Other bronze winners were Katelyn Lehner with a time of 8:305 in the 60-metre hurdles, Courtney Hufsmith in the 3,000-metre women’s race in 9:17.02 and Naomi Manske with a 12.11-metre leap in the triple jump.

GUARDIANS GOLDEN AT MIXED CURLING PROVINCIAL­S

The St. Joseph Guardians won all five of their games on their way to a gold medal at the high school provincial mixed curling championsh­ips. The Guardians defeated host Rosetown 5-4 in the final. St. Joseph won all their other games by large margins, including an 11-4 win over Spiritwood in the semifinals.

Holy Cross competed in the boys’ provincial championsh­ips in Spiritwood and Bishop Mahoney in the girls’ championsh­ips in Ituna. Both schools missed the playoffs with three straight round robin losses.

FORTY MEDALS FOR SASKATOON WRESTLERS AT HIGH SCHOOL EVENT

Saskatoon wrestlers picked up 40 medals at the provincial high school wrestling championsh­ips at Mount Royal on the weekend, including nine gold, nine silver and 12 bronze.

Girls’ gold medal winners were Saige Evertman of St. Joseph (64 kg) and Danaye Holynski of Tommy Douglas (80 kg). Winners on the boys side were Logan Bohle of Aden Bowman (47 kg), Damyen Reid of Holy Cross (50 kg), Brett McGunigal of Holy Cross (53 kg), Aidan Akhtar of Centennial (59 kg), Maxwell Meekins of Holy Cross (62 kg), Mason Nikbakht of Walter Murray (77 kg ) and George Ren of Centennial (115 kg).

SASKATOON STARS SHUT 0UT REGINA REBELS 6-0

The Saskatoon Stars got the early jump on the Regina Rebels in their second round Saskatchew­an Female Midget AAA Hockey League playoff series opener. The host Stars shut out the Rebels 6-0 at Agriplace Arena on Saturday.

Grace Shirley led the Stars with two goals and two assists while Joelle Fiala added two more goals and an assist of her own. Mackenna Parker and Kaitlin Jockims also scored while Jordan Ivanco picked up the 16-save shutout. Chantel Weller made 33 saves for the Rebels. Game 2 of the series goes on Monday at 8 p.m. in Regina.

QUAKERS TAKE 3-2 PJHL SERIES LEAD

Brayden Uhrich completed a hat trick 4:41 into overtime to give the Saskatoon AGI Insurance Quakers a 4-3 win over the Carrot River Outback Thunder on Saturday in Saskatoon. The Quakers took a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven series, pending Game 6 on Sunday night in Carrot River. Results were not available at press time.

The Quakers also beat the Thunder 4-2 on Friday, to take the lead in the series after trailing two games to one.

Goaltender Derrick Hucul followed his 35-save win on Friday with a 49-save effort on Saturday. Uhrich is tied for the playoff lead in points with 12 and goals with seven.
