4-time convicted sex offender facing fresh set of charges
48-year-old, under new name, nets seven counts of child pornography
Previously sentenced four times on child pornography offences, and later declared Saskatchewan’s first long-term offender for that type of crime, a 48-year-old man is facing several new child porn charges.
Gabriel Michael Fisher, previously known as Kevin Daniel Hudec, has been charged with three counts each of possession of child pornography and accessing child pornography, as well as one count each of making child pornography and breach of probation.
According to the Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit, an investigation began on Jan. 5 into suspicious social media activity. The charges, according to the ICE unit in a news release, “are the result of offences committed by accessing certain social media that was available through the phone system.”
Fisher was arrested on March 29 “where he was residing ” in Regina and kept in custody. He was remanded following his first court appearance and is scheduled to appear April 5 in Regina provincial court.
In 2016, Hudec — now known as Fisher — received the long-term offender designation, along with a 5½-year prison sentence.
Hudec previously pleaded guilty to possessing and accessing child porn between January and May 2013, as well as twice breaching his probation that same year — once by possessing computer equipment that could access the Internet, and the other by having contact with children under 16 (his then-girlfriend’s kids).
The maximum prison term available in 2016 when those offences occurred was five years. Hudec’s sentence was set then at 4½ years for the pornography offences and an additional year for the breaches. Since then, the maximum term has been upped to 10 years.
Allowing for remand credit calculated at 3½ years, Hudec was left with two years in a federal institution.
The judge also imposed a 10-year long-term supervision order — the maximum — to follow the prison term.
In the instance for which he was sentenced in 2016, court heard Hudec was found with more than 200 videos and 5,000 images on a computer his girlfriend’s kids could have accessed.
