Local athletes competing at Commonweal­th Games

Six athletes from Saskatchew­an are to compete at the 2018 Commonweal­th Games, which began Wednesday and continue until April 15 on the Gold Coast of Australia.

The Canadian team includes Saskatoon’s Rylan Wiens (diving) and Samantha Ryan (para swimming ), Hanley ’s Taryn Suttie (shot put), Humboldt’s Paige Crozon (basketball), and Regina’s Nikki Todd (squash) and Jessica Frotten (para athletics).

Summer Masikewich, a Calgarybor­n member of the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies women’s basketball team, is also at the Games.

Jean Roney of Regina is the team manager in lawn bowling.

Two Saskatoon-based coaches — Rick Reelie (para sport) and Mary Carroll (diving) — are at the Games.

Saskatoon Stars battling for spot

at Esso Cup: With the provincial champions title under their belt, the Saskatoon Stars, of the Saskatchew­an Female Midget AAA Hockey League, are facing off against their Manitoba counterpar­ts this weekend in an effort to win a berth at the Esso Cup.

The Stars will take on the Eastman Selects in the Western Regional best-of-three series starting Friday night, with Game 2 scheduled for Saturday and Game 3, if necessary, set for Sunday.

The winner of the series advances to the Esso Cup April 22-28 in Bridgewate­r, N.S.

Battleford­s North Stars stay alive

in SJHL playoffs: The Battleford­s North Stars have forced a fifth game in their best-of-seven Saskatchew­an Junior Hockey League semifinal series against the Estevan Bruins, winning 9-6 in Game 4 of the series on Tuesday night.

The North Stars will have to win the next three games straight to clinch the series as Estevan currently leads the series 3-1. Game 5 is scheduled for Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Humboldt Broncos got their first win of their semifinal series on Tuesday night, claiming a 2-1 victory over the Nipawin Hawks, who lead the series 2-1.

Game 4 of that series was played on Wednesday night. Results were not available at press time.

Regina up 2-1 against Delisle in

PJHL final: Fraiser Belanger netted the overtime game winner for the Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals seven minutes and 12 seconds into the extra period on Tuesday night to give his team a 4-3 victory.

The Game 3 win puts the Capitals up 2-1 against the Delisle Chiefs in the best-of-seven Prairie Junior Hockey League final.

Game 4 of the series is scheduled for Friday.
