Broncos crash touches lives in all sports

- MIKE GANTER

It was an incident that had nothing to do with the sport of basketball, but the bus crash that killed 15 people with the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team touched everyone.

Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey found himself discussing the incident with his Seattle neighbour, Seahawks punter Jon Ryan. Ryan is a Regina native. This one hit close to home for him.

Casey has never been to Saskatchewan, but he can only imagine what the province is going through.

“It’s unbelievable,” Casey said Sunday.

“It’s your worst nightmare as a parent to send your kids off to play on a bus and something like that happens. I can just imagine that city losing 15 young people, coaches. You just can’t grasp how that touches you and touches the sports world in general. We’re all human.”

Before Sunday’s game between the Toronto Rap tor sand the visiting Orlando Magic, there was a moment of silence to honour the victims and their families.

In Arlington, Texas, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman took to the mound with “Humboldt Broncos” written on one side of his cap and “SK” on the other in Saturday’s start against the Texas Rangers.

“I had a heavy heart all day. I woke up and I felt it,” Stroman said. With files from Steve Buffery mganter@postmedia.com
