Greetings from Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark
As TCU Place turns 50 years old, Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark took a moment to share some of his favourite memories and what the building has come to mean to the city.
“If the walls of Sid Buckwold theatre could speak, there’d be so many incredible stories to tell,” says Clark.
Recently, Clark was able to attend the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra tribute to Joni Mitchell with Sarah Slean performing. “I feel like it brought together a chance to recognize one of our own.” Adding, “It was a very powerful evening.”
Clark calls the theatre and convention centre a “critical gathering place”. The community marks everything from graduations to Telemiracle to the latest concert events. “We host the world in conferences and gatherings that take place there.”
Clark credits the staff and successive boards who’ve been instrumental in making TCU Place a success – and the spill over economic effects in hotels, restaurants and other retailers.
“It only works because of many great partners. I want to pay tribute to everyone who’s helped make TCU Place a place of success,” Clark adds.
In light of the facilities report released last month on the future of both SaskTel Centre and TCU Place Clark says, TCU Place has a strong future. “We’ve learned that there are some challenges, but we will work on those things. Obviously, there’s some further analysis and assessment that we have to do around the future of TCU Place. In the meantime, we’re seeing more concerts, more events, more conferences and I think there’s going to be – as the city grows – an opportunity to build on that success.”
