GOFUNDME TO WRAP UP,

The Humboldt Broncos’ GoFundMe page — which has raised more than $12 million from donors worldwide — will remain open until midnight Wednesday.

That will allow for any additional online donations before the page is closed and funds can be transferred to a non-profit corporation known as Humboldt Broncos Memorial Fund Inc., “to be allocated for their intended purpose,” Broncos team president Kevin Garinger announced Monday afternoon during a news conference in Saskatoon.

The Broncos’ board of directors has made the decision in consultation with legal counsel, MLT Aikins, and executives from GoFundMe. com head office, Garinger continued.

“We are a volunteer group of people who are now leaning on those experts in this area to help us deal with this and support our families the best way we can.”

The Broncos’ online fundraising campaign — set up in the wake of the team bus crash tragedy that has left 16 of its passengers dead — has become the largest of its kind in Canada.

An advisory committee is being established to make a recommendation for the allocation of the funds, which will be held in trust until that allocation occurs. Once the committee is formalized, an update will be provided.

“We want to get this dealt with sooner rather than later, but to be honest our primary focus is doing this accurately and properly, as opposed to having some sort of rush timeline to get it accomplished,” said Garinger.

The Broncos have had unprecedented support from around the world following the horrific team bus crash on April 6.

The GoFundMe page was started by local community member Sylvie Kellington.

On Monday, the Broncos also announced that, together with legal counsel Robertson Stromberg, they have launched the Humboldt-Strong Community Foundation to accommodate incoming funds.

“We’ve been humbled, and our spirits buoyed, by the staggering number of individuals and groups wanting to make donations, or holding fundraisers to support our organization, as we deal with this unprecedented crisis,” Garinger said.

The foundation will support Broncos players, employees, families, and volunteers, as well as first responders, teams, athletes, related organizations and communities affected by the bus crash.
