City hall hits visible minorities goal but lags elsewhere in diversity initiative

The City of Saskatoon has achieved one of its workplace diversity goals, but still has work to do on the others.

A report presented to a city council committee on Monday showed the percentage of employees who identify as a visible minority had increased as of December to 11 per cent.

That matches the city’s goal for visible minorities, established using targets set by the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission.

The city has also set workforce goals for Aboriginal people, people with disabilities and women in occupations where they are underrepresented. The city lags in meeting those targets, the report says.

The percentage of city workers who identify as disabled stayed stagnant at 3.7 per cent in both July and December, well below the city’s target of 12.4 per cent.

The share of employees who identify as Aboriginal dropped from 8.4 per cent in July to 7.1 per cent in December. That’s about halfway to the city’s goal of 14 per cent Aboriginal workers.
