Class of 2018 left their mark on province’s sports scene
The Saskatchewan Sports Hall Of Fame Introduced its 2018 inductees on thursday. five athletes, one builder and one team are to be officially inducted into the hall of fame on sept. 29 at the conexus arts centre. here’s a look at the hall of fame’s latest inductees:
ATHLETES
Kim Bergey Kaip (Regina): Canadian junior judo champion in 1989 and senior champion two years later ... world masters judo champion in 2003 ... four-time canadian wrestling champion and two-time national university gold medallist.
Lisa Franks (Moose Jaw): Earned a combined six medals (five gold and one silver) in wheelchair racing at the 2000 and 2004 summer paralympics … a member of canada’s fifth-place wheelchair basketball team at the 2008 summer paralympics.
Johnny Gottselig (Regina): A member of the regina pats for two seasons (1923-25) who shared in regina’s victory in the 1925 memorial cup … spent entire 17-year nhl career with the chicago blackhawks, with whom he had 176 goals and 195 assists in 589 games … won stanley cups in 1934 and 1938 as a player with the blackhawks and in 1961 as chicago’s director of public relations.
Dick Nash (Mantario): In 1956, was the first saskatchewan cowboy to win the canadian bull riding and all-around championships at the canadian finals rodeo … competed in rodeo from 16 until his death at 31 after a rodeo accident. dave pagan (nipawin): one of nine individuals from saskatchewan to play major league baseball … pagan’s pitching career featured stints with the new york yankees (1973-76), baltimore orioles (1976), seattle mariners (1976-77) and pittsburgh pirates (1977).
BUILDER
Robert Haver (Saskatoon): One of the founders of the SAskAtoon Rowing CluB … Involved in rowing for 46 yeArs, serving in every fACet of the sport.
TEAM
1984 Randy Woytowich mixed curling team (Regina): WoytowiCh, third KAthy Thiele, seCond BriAn MCCusker And leAd JAn Betker BeAt QueBeC 6-3 in the finAl to CAp An undefeAted run through the 1984 CAnAdiAn mixed Curling ChAmpionship … All four were nAmed All-stArs.
