It’s folly to argue against science

-

Polls show that 39 per cent of Canadians don’t believe that the climate is changing because of human actions. Oh how I wish that they were right.

Scientists have given us the knowledge to extend our life span from an average of about 45 years to almost 85 years.

They invented television that bring programs from around the world and rockets that took people to the Moon as well as material to Mars and beyond.

We also enjoy the fruits of their labour in many other ways.

When 97 per cent of scientists tell us that climate change is causing very serious problems for us because of human activity, why would we doubt them?

We already find serious problems developing around the world. For example, warm ocean currents are quickly melting ice under glaciers near the South Pole and elsewhere. As a result, huge tracts of land in Florida and other places will very likely disappear under ocean waters.

It will take a long time to reverse climate changes. For the sake of our children, grandchildren, and everyone, it is long past time that we urge our governments to enact laws that will carry out effective programs to help correct the problems that we and our fellow humans have created. It would be utter folly to continue to be part of the crowd that would leave the earth like a desolate landfill. Randy Nelson, Saskatoon
