Stars blank the host team to stay perfect at Esso Cup

With a pair of goals and a pair of assists, Mackenna Parker led the Saskatoon Stars to a 6-0 victory over the host team, Metro Boston Pizza, on Wednesday at the Esso Cup in Bridgewate­r, N.S.

Saskatoon kept up the offensive pressure throughout the game, generating 49 shots on Metro goaltender Brooke Bennett, compared to only six shots faced by Stars’ goalie Arden Kliewer.

Kliewer recorded Saskatoon’s third shutout of the tournament.

With the win, the Stars improve to 4-0 with one round-robin game remaining on Thursday against the Northern Selects. Playoffs start Friday.

NOTRE DAME HOUNDS CONTINUE WINNING WAYS

A 4-2 victory over the Cantonnier­s de Magog on Wednesday lifted the Notre Dame Hounds to a 3-0 record at the Telus Cup in Sudbury.

Nolan Renwick led the Hounds with a goal and an assist.

Quinn Schmiemann, Zach Plucinski and Coalson Wolford each added goals.

Notre Dame goalie Aaron Randazzo stopped 27 of 29 shots.

The Hounds take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Thursday before closing out the round robin with a game against the Moncton Flyers on Friday.

ANDERSON’S CREW IN THE PLAYOFFS

Sherry Anderson’s winning streak at the World Senior Curling Championsh­ips came to an end on Wednesday after the Saskatoonb­ased team, which is representi­ng Canada, lost to Sweden 8-7.

It was Canada’s first loss of the championsh­ip.

Despite the setback — and with one game still to play in the round robin on Thursday against Australia — Canada’s 5-1 record qualifies them for the playoffs that begin Friday.

Curling alongside Anderson in Ostersund, Sweden, are teammates Patty Hersikorn, Brenda Goertzen and Anita Silvernagl­e.

CANADA FACING BATTLE OF UNBEATEN RINKS

It will be a meeting of two undefeated teams on Thursday when Canada takes on Korea in the final round robin game for both teams at the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championsh­ip in Ostersund, Sweden.

The Canadian duo of Saskatoon’s Kirk Muyres and Edmonton’s Laura Crocker defeated Germany 9-4 on Wednesday to keep their winning streak alive.

Their 6-0 record has the Canadians sitting tied with Korea for first place in the Group E standings. Both teams have qualified for playoffs.

BETHLEHEM STARS WIN BRIAN WALTER SHIELD

With an overall record of 63-7 — in boys and girls singles action as well as boys, girls and mixed doubles competitio­n — following the high school senior badminton regular season, the Bethlehem Stars have been named the winners of the Brian Walter shield.

Meanwhile, the city championsh­ips will be played on Thursday from 1 p.m.-9 p.m. at Walter Murray Collegiate.
