THE PRESS SHOuLD INFORM AND EDuCAtE
The purpose of the press is many fold; however, I think most agree to “inform and educate” would be in the upper section of the list. On this premise let me express an opinion on reading the April 13 StarPhoenix.
“SaskTel Centre quickly approaching the end of its useful life.” Really, from that statement are we to conclude the architects of the day designed a throwaway arena?
Secondly, will a change of location produce a better hockey team that would subsequently draw more than 3,581 fans to an area that has a capacity of 15,195?
I didn’t notice any quotes from the Rush owner, who in fact are coming close to jamming the place with fans.
The article did consist of some sound commentary; I quote: “The building has been very, very good for us” and “we are not in a panic to build a building tomorrow,” made by none other than the great community supporter who understands the principle of balancing a chequebook, Mr. Brodsky himself.
I am hoping the latter quote might be suggesting 10 to 20 years down the road.
The need for a convention centre is another story; and we need one tomorrow and yes downtown, but it has no relevance to another arena.
I made the above comments with page A8 of the press in mind where Murray Mandryk brings to the attention of those who may have forgotten the province is carrying a major debt load heading toward $20 billion.
