Must-have looks for Spring/Summer 2018
Spring may have been a no-show this year, but spring fashions are not! Ultimo Euromoda has long been a source for cutting edge fashion. Spring collections feature the latest trends, an abundance of signature pieces and the quality you seek.
A new line from England, the fabulous Joe Brown collection is a prime example. These light-weight tweed jackets for women in aqua, mint green and shell pink offer generous accents and detailing. “They have fine button detailing, suede elbow patches, and a lot of them have great colours inside,” says Barry Flynn, owner of Ultimo Euromoda. Some have little scotty dog lapel pins.
Ultimo is running a full jersey suit program in five colours for women this year. Stash the jacket in a bag and it will emerge pristine. M.I.K.O, a Japanese company from Toronto, designs the jackets with linings that leave the back seam open for full stretch. Coordinate with sleek skirt options in four-way stretch, or pair the jacket with a T-shirt and crop jeans for the weekend.
If you ladies have been missing coloured denims, don’t worry – they’re back! Put some pop in your wardrobe with Gsus jeans in shades like aqua and washed grape. Another Gsus line offers health benefits. “Some are coated with beeswax and are aloe vera infused so they’re actually good for your skin,” says Flynn. “Gsus is the only company in the world doing that.”
Another trend to watch for reinterprets glam rock from the 80s, which is being reclaimed by some brands. We’re seeing studs on belts, wrist cuffs or the back of an item, and blazers with gold buttons. “Fashion goes in 20 to 25-year cycles. We haven’t seen gold buttons for many years,” says Flynn.
Ultimo is showing a military style blazer for women that has double rows of gold buttons, evoking a Duran Duran style. Made by Femme Fatale, the jersey blazer has none of the confinement of a traditional jacket. It feels like a track jacket, but you’re dressed up, Flynn says.
Gold is also making a splash as a highlight colour in bracelets and shoes. Kenneth Cole has an evening sandal with a tasteful gold spray on tan leather. They’re great with a dress, but can also be paired with crop jeans. You don’t have to be stuck in high heels all summer!
There’s some fashion forward fun for men too. “One of the big things this year is neoprene and full-stretch running shoes that are dressy,” says Flynn. The shoe has more of dress style toe as opposed to a rounded toe. A light grey textured shoe by Muroex, a stretch toggle shoe from Spain, and a Pegada driving shoe from Brazil are some of the options.
Maximize comfort with a new line from Italy called Circolo 1901. The entire collection is jersey, including full suits. “They’ll be a classic longlasting jacket,” says Flynn. Lapels are getting slightly wider on jackets so ties are widening as well. “You generally know you have the right width of tie when you take the widest part of the blade and place it on the widest part of the lapel and it should match up. That’s when we have the proper balance.”
Flynn adds that men’s fashion remains in the slim and sleek zone. “We’re not going back to loose and baggy, or big-shoulder jackets anytime soon.”
Ultimo is a leader in athleisure fashion and almost everything has an element of stretch to it. “It allows a lot of men to wear something a little slimmer,” says Flynn, adding that the average guy can knock off 10 to 15 pounds visually just by wearing clothes that fit.
