Quest for healthier skin

Local doctor answers the with research-based customized protocols

- JEANNIE ARMSTRONG

Solving her own skin care problems was what originally motivated Saskatoon family physician Dr. Coby Demkiw-Bartel to spend the past three decades researching skin care and beauty products.

She’s now using her extensive experience to help others from across Canada achieve their quest for healthier skin, offering customized consultations and individualized skin care protocols that really work. It’s why she founded “TheSheDoc.com”, independent of her family medical practice. The website offers extensive details about the skin care services and medical-grade products that Dr. Demkiw-Bartel has found to be most effective.

The results her clients have achieved are so rewarding, says Dr. Demkiw-Bartel. “When I see the changes in my patients’ skin issues, there’s huge satisfaction. A lot of people have suffered with different skin issues for a significant time. Seeing their results and responses is very gratifying.”

Dr. Demkiw-Bartel understands the impact that skin care problems can have on a person’s confidence and self-esteem – from acne to signs of aging. “My skin care journey started about 30 years ago. I had perfect skin as a teenager, but in my 20s, I started to experience significant problems. I had quite dramatic acne, which resulted in hyperpigmentation. As the decades went by, aging and allergy issues started,” she says.

With a clinical background in laboratory technology, pharmacy, family medicine and elective studies in dermatology, Dr. Demkiw-Bartel brings a multi-disciplined perspective to her skin care research. “These disciplines uniquely prepared me for the research I have undertaken to find effective scientifically proven products and treatments for skin care issues. That research has become my passion.”

The first step to healthier skin is a complimentary skin care consultation, where Dr. Demkiw-Bartel identifies each patient’s skin care goals. “Each consultation is customized to the individual. It’s all about selecting the right formulations and treatments for your skin, your budget, your personal likes and dislikes,” she says.

“I’ll provide the patient with the suggested program. There’s no obligation to purchase a thing. You can go home and think about it, go on the website and read more about the products. When you’re ready to go ahead, we can proceed.”

Dr. Demkiw-Bartel performs all of the consultations and treatments herself. “It’s my professional preference. Being hands-on allows me to ensure that the patient is receiving the optimum care and results.”

During her extensive research, Dr. Demkiw-Bartel has identified medicalgrade skin care products that really work and live up to their claims based on science. “Each product must achieve visible benefits and results to receive my recommendation.”

Among the skin issues that these products address include dull skin, acne/acne scarring, aging skin, photo (sun)-damaged skin, fine lines/wrinkles, sensitive skin, eczema, rosacea and pigmentation issues like melasma and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (i.e. brown spots). “I also have patients who don’t have these problems, but desire healthy skin and want to be proactive and preventative in taking care of it,” says Dr. Demkiw-Bartel.

Many women turn to cosmetics to camouflage skin issues, but Dr. Demkiw-Bartel has found that some makeup products can actually contribute to complexion problems. “A number of products contain talc, fillers and oils, which can plug or irritate the skin. Over the past eight years, I’ve researched and assessed different medical-grade makeup lines. I’ve discovered the Glo Skin Beauty mineral makeup line which actually benefits skin. For people with acne or rosacea, it calms, controls and doesn’t add to the problem. It’s great for all skin types.”

She recommends Glo Minerals’ pressed base foundation, a “silk-like” triple-milled formulation. “You can put on a light application or apply multiple layers for heavier coverage, yet your skin still breathes. It’s a powder that feels like a liquid.”

Glo Minerals’ Luxe Liquid Bright Concealer is a corrective concealer in a pen applicator that cancels out imperfections and dark spots, neutralizes redness and most effectively acts to brighten the eyes without looking crepey like most products do in an older eye. “It’s a little miracle pen. People are falling in love with it at my practice.”

Glo’s Shimmer Brick is a multi-tasking contour-blush-highlighter in one. “It’s a great one-step product that looks very natural yet polished,” she says.

“Now that I’m devoting more time to skin consultations outside of my regular family medicine practice, I can provide customized skin care protocols from start to finish – from addressing or preventing skin issues to offering products that complement your complexion. Glo Skin Beauty has filled that place.”

Dr. Demkiw-Bartel also offers a variety of skin care treatments for skin optimization. “The Red Carpet Treatment is a clinic favourite and was designed by Dr. Obagi, the founder of ZO Medical and ZO Skin Health, for his celebrity clients. It’s a multi-step customizable treatment: cleansing, exfoliation, activation, peel prep, peel and then customized additions to fine tune your skin. After the Red Carpet Treatment, your skin is truly remarkable, and best of all, there’s no down time.”

For clients who want to get serious with their treatments for firming, acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkling, Dr. Demkiw-Bartel recommends the medical-grade micro-needling system. “This treatment directs medicalgrade active ingredients to the exact layer of the skin that needs waking up. That stimulation has proven re- sults that far surpassed my expectations. I’ve created a multi-use home kit, which used twice a week lasts for about a year – at a fraction of the cost comparable to in-clinic treatments.”
