Laval takes wheelchair basketball championsh­ip

The Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League championsh­ips were held in Martensvil­le over the weekend and the Gladiateur­s de Laval are headed home as the Tier 1 champions. They defeated British Columbia 57-41 in the final. Saskatchew­an Green defeated Alberta Northern Lights 67-51 to capture the bronze medal and Saskatchew­an White defeated the Brampton Cruiser Suns 48-39 in the Tier 2 final.

VALKYRIES START SEASON WITH A BANG

The Saskatoon Valkyries had a great start to their Western Women’s Canadian Football League season with a 48-0 thumping of the host Winnipeg Wolfpack on Sunday.

Olivia Woo, Ricki Obed and Reed Thorstad had touchdown receptions for the Valkyries while Makenna Matheson added two rushing TDs and Sarah Wright had one of her own. Emmarae Dale added an intercepti­on return for a touchdown.

The Valkyries return home to host the Regina Riot on Saturday at 7 p.m. at SMF Field.

HAWKS TRAIL 3-2 IN ANAVET CUP

The Nipawin Hawks are down three games to two in their bestof-seven Anavet Cup series to the Steinbach Pistons and headed to Steinbach for Game 6 and a possible Game 7. The Hawks lost a tight 2-1 Game 5 at home to the Pistons. Game 6 will be played on Monday while a seventh game would be played on Tuesday, also in Steinbach, if the Hawks can win on Monday.

The Hawks won the Saskatchew­an Junior Hockey League championsh­ip while the Pistons are the Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions. The winner of the series will move on to the RBC Cup national junior A hockey championsh­ip from May 12 to 21 in Chilliwack, B.C.
