Rebekah Maurice plans to wake up early to watch the royal wedding live on Saturday.

“I can’t wait. They deserve all the blessings and happiness in the world,” she said.

“I’m just happy he found his happiness. I don’t know them personally, but I believe everyone deserves to be happy.”

Maurice plans to watch at a friend’s house, and although she’s not sure if she’ll be able to stay awake, she really wants to see Meghan Markle’s gown. The moment she most anticipates is “when (Prince Harry) sees (Markle) for the first time walking towards him,” she said.

Some Saskatoon residents plan to celebrate the royal event by getting dressed up to attend brunch at the Delta Bessborough hotel. Guests can purchase the Royal Slumber Party package, which includes accommodation for two tonight and brunch Saturday morning. Brunch-only tickets are also available. The brunch begins at 4:30 a.m., so guests can watch the royal wedding live in the Adam ballroom.

Deanna McMillan plans to attend the brunch. After watching Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding at 2 a.m. and then going to work, she wants to take advantage of this wedding taking place on a Saturday, she said.

“I thought that this time instead of watching in my pyjamas, (I would) actually get dressed up to watch it. I mean, there’s only so many times in one’s life where they have an excuse to wear a fascinator.”

She’s excited to watch it live, even at such an early hour, she said.

“Much like a sports fan would want to watch a game live, I don’t want anything to be spoiled for me. I want my first impressions to be authentic,” she said.

“I will never officially be invited to a royal wedding, so watching it live at the most ‘royal’ place in Saskatoon will be the next closest thing.”

Chef Josh Wright will oversee the culinary side of the hotel’s event.

“For something that people are watching from 6,000 kilometres away, (the event) is kind of a unique thing to do,” he said.

Planning for the meal began two weeks ago, and food preparations were scheduled to begin Thursday. Kitchen staff will start their day at 1 a.m. Saturday, Wright said, noting the food will be a traditional brunch “elevated a little bit with some local flare from Saskatoon, (and) some international products to reflect the British side of things.”
