CFL team hopes visit will help buoy sprits in Humboldt

REGINA The Saskatchew­an Roughrider­s are heading to Humboldt on June 3 as part of their support for the community that was rocked by an April 6 bus crash involving the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos.

All 29 people on the Broncos’ bus were killed or injured.

The CFL team will conduct a walk-through at Glenn Hall Park Football Fields from noon until 1 p.m. The Riders will also play host to barbecue lunch in conjunctio­n with the walk-through.

Players and coaches are to be available for autographs and photos after the walk-through.

“While we continue to mourn for all those affected by the devastatin­g event of April 6, we want to demonstrat­e our ongoing support for the Broncos organizati­on and the community of Humboldt,” Craig Reynolds, the Saskatchew­an Roughrider­s’ president and CEO, said in a prepared statement.

“We have been working in partnershi­p with the Broncos’ organizati­on since the tragedy, hoping to play a small role in assisting the team, the victims, the community and entire province through this painful time by channellin­g the healing power of sport, and by lending the strength of Rider Nation.”

Broncos president Kevin Garinger welcomes the Riders’ appearance.

“The Broncos are so grateful for the Saskatchew­an Roughrider­s, who have proven to be an invaluable support and resource in recent weeks,” Garinger said in the media release. “We look forward to June 3, where we aim to bring the spirit of Rider Nation as well as an opportunit­y to enjoy the optimism for the exciting CFL season ahead, to all those in the community of Humboldt.”

The Riders have designated their June 30 home game against the Montreal Alouettes as “Humboldt Strong ” and are dedicating it to the families and victims of the crash. Details on the game are to be announced in Humboldt on June 3.

The Riders begin their main training camp Sunday in Saskatoon.
