SPCA keen to find homes for cats

The Saskatoon SPCA is overrun by adorable cats and kittens. To make room for more, the organization is offering interested adopters the opportunity to pick what they pay to adopt a furry feline.

The SPCA facility has about 100 cats, kittens and barn cats — more than 50 of which are available to leave right away. Spokeswoman Heather Sutherland said the building cannot house any more.

“We’ve filled our last kennel, so we are at the point where we have to use carriers,” she said.

“We are not taking in any owned animals and we are currently encouraging people who find stray animals to try to keep them at home — but make a report with us so that when we do have a little bit more room they can bring those animals in.”

While the promotion causes the shelter to lose some money, it’s well worth it knowing the cats will end up in good homes while also freeing up space in the facility so more rescues can be brought in, she said. The goal is to find good homes for at least 70 cats.

“If you’re interested in adopting, don’t wait to come in,” Sutherland said.

“Our aim is to try to find these animals a home as soon as possible because that allows us to rescue other animals and bring them in to get the treatment that they need.”

The pick-your-price promotion will run until June 10, though Sutherland said the SPCA may decide to extend it if they can’t get enough cats adopted by that time.

For animal lovers who are unable to adopt, the organization is always looking for donations in the form of money, wet cat food, nonclumping cat litter, liquid laundry detergent and bleach.
