Starphoenix reporter’s work saluted
Andrea Hill among winners at annual YWCA Women of Distinction Awards
Saskatoon Starphoenix reporter Andrea Hill was among 11 winners at the 36th annual YWCA Women of Distinction Awards.
Hill — who during her time at the Starphoenix has covered stories ranging from the Gerald Stanley trial to the La Loche school shooting to skiers from the north wanting to blaze a path to the Olympics — received the 29-and-under award at the ceremony held Thursday night at TCU Place.
Hill has previously won the prestigious Goff Penny Memorial Prize for young journalists.
The awards are “such a great celebration of women’s achievements,” said YWCA Saskatoon CEO Shannon Friesen.
More than 750 guests attended Thursday’s ceremony and dinner. A total of 41 women were nominated for the 2018 awards.
Last year’s event raised approximately $160,000, all of which benefits community programs focused on housing, employment, early learning and wellness.
“Almost all of our nominees tell us, ‘Oh, I was just doing my job, I’m not doing anything special,’ and they really don’t see it that way, so it’s just recognition for things that they are already doing,” said YWCA director of development and communications Joy-ann Allin earlier this year.
