JOYNE MARKETPLACE BRINGS ‘ECLECTIC MIX’ OF ARTISANS TOGETHER
Broadway shop features rotating roster of vendors and products , writes Erin Petrow.
It’s the perfect one-stop shop for gifts and treasures that are both local and handmade.
When Brant Rumpel opened Joyne he wanted to create a space that not only showcases the works of local artisans but also gives them exposure and support to grow their businesses.
It is not a consignment store, Rumpel clarifies. The local business owners pay to rent a space on a monthly basis in the shop and are responsible for decorating and restocking their space and because they’ve already paid the rental fee, the artists receive 100 per cent of the money when an item is sold. It’s like shopping at a craft fair — only everything can be purchased in one transaction.
After testing out the waters with a successful pop up shop before Christmas, Rumpel decided to open up the shop on Broadway permanently — the perfect area for a store with new wonders always waiting to be discovered.
“The store is changing often,” he says. “We bring in new vendors all the time so it’s a difference experience every couple months ... and Broadway is a good fit for us, because people are on the streets walking around trying to discover new things — and that’s really what our store does because you can’t find these things elsewhere.”
With a constantly changing artisans and products you’re never sure what to expect when you enter the store but he said on a regular basis you can find art, jewelry, skin care items, kids clothes, handmade cards and even local food products.
“It’s quite an eclectic mix of items,” Rumpel says. “We have a lot of Saskatchewan themed items as well, so if you have someone visiting it’s a great place to bring them because it’s such a good mix of locally made stuff and a lot of Saskatchewan stuff — it’s just a really good place to find the perfect gift.”

LOCAL PRAIRIE HORTICULTURE & DESIGN
What began as mowing lawns in the summer as a reason to get outdoors while making a little bit of cash has turned into a year-round full time landscaping business for young entrepreneurs Genevieve Jones and Cass Hazel — and they couldn’t be more happy about it.
Their love of landscaping started when a local landscaper Janet Wanner began to mentor them to take over the Midtown Plaza ornamental gardens — which they now look after year round. It’s that sense of community they share with Wanner and other local businesses, including the Dieter Martin Greenhouse in Langham where they source all their plants, that they are hoping to pass along to their clients.
“We love it, we’re outside everyday and we never have to go to the gym,” Jones says laughing. “It’s really nice because a lot of our clients are repeat clients and a lot of them have become friends to us.”
Jones says they are able to work in any kind of landscape design — from the more traditional ornamental gardens to the new trend of creating urban agricultural spaces. The key, she says, is to match the type of garden her clients are dreaming of with plants that match how much, or little, work the homeowner wants to invest once the plants are in place.
With a heavy focus on creating gardens that are water sustainable, through the practice of tying in eavestroughs and other water runoff into the design, each landscaping project takes about one week from design to completion, Jones says. For those who prefer to take a more DIY approach, they also offer a consulting service to help choose the perfect plants for the space.
“We are the plant people, we are the plant whispers,” she says. “We are the ones who will pick out the right plants for your yard. Whatever you want we can find it and install it. We will pretty much make your yard functional to the level that you’re willing to look after — it’s all about creating a garden that perfectly matches your lifestyle.” Local Prairie Horticulture & Design Owners: Genevieve Jones and Cass Hazel Website: www.localprairiedesigns.ca Phone: 306-715-8000
