Heidi Munro dishes on her new album
City singer’s latest offering has influences of R&B, jazz, soul
Saskatoon retro-soul-jazz-pop singer Heidi Munro keeps a steady pace of live shows, but she has also found time to hit the studio. Munro keeps busy with the Big Stuff show and dance band, and fronting The Real Groovy Band featuring Rich Mcfarlane, Kim Salkeld, Sheldon Corbett, Adam Streisel, Dave Anderson and Glenn Ens — her collaborators on the new album. Here’s how Munro describes it.
Album Title: Heidi Munro and The Real Groovy Band.
Release date: Dec 16, 2017. Producer: Sheldon Corbett, assistant producers Glenn Ens and Heidi Munro.
Studio: Audio Art Recording Saskatoon, engineered by Glenn Ens.
Who played on it: Rich Mcfarlane,
Sheldon Corbett, Glenn Ens, Kim Salkeld, Dave Chobot, Jack Semple, Don Griffith, Gent Laird, Adam Streisel, Sarah Anderson, Dave Anderson, Dean Mcneill, Carla Ens, Sharon Matheson.
Sounds like: Influences of Bonnie Raitt of the early ’70s, Etta James, Susan Tedeschi, Emmylou Harris, jazz big band music, and soul R&B.
Lead single: Every Day Will Be Like a Holiday, duet with Jack Semple. This is a heavy soul R&B tune originally released by William Bell in 1968. It had a hint of holiday flavour that coincided with the season. Jack first played guitar for me in a talent show when I was 15 years old. This was a great moment. I have utmost respect for him.
Deep cut: Falling. I believe every original song has elements that are autobiographical. Falling is a song about a deep, everlasting love that had never been experienced before, nor will ever be found again in this lifetime. It’s basically a very real, raw, bare and very sad song. This song was produced and played so beautifully.
Fun fact: The whole creative process with fellow bandmates and how intricate and precise they are in a recording environment. I love them, they are soul family, so much fun, and incredible individuals and talents.
Upcoming shows: June 9 at The Bassment. June 22, 10:30 p.m., 6 Twelve Lounge Sheraton Hotel, Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival with The Realgroovy Quartet. July 1, 8 p.m., Nutrien Free Stage, jazz festival with The Realgroovyband
