SERVING UP SWEET MEMORIES

- ERIN PETROW

Get ready for a double scoop of nostalgia as Dickie Dee Ice Cream and its signature bikes get ready to hit the streets of Saskatoon once again.

The journey began last year when Josh Turner acquired an ice cream trailer, next he came across a classic 1970s Dickie Dee Ice Cream bike for sale — since then he has expanded the fleet to add 11 more classic ice cream bikes and a van.

When he acquired that first bike he knew he was on to something special, and would throw on a fedora and suspenders after work to go out and sell ice cream under the moniker JT’s Tasty Treats, but it wasn’t too long until he was approached by Dickie Dee to re-establish the brand in Saskatoon.

“I knew the name had a lot of value to it,” Turner said. “There’s ebbs and flows in businesses and I think they just needed a new energy.”

And Turner seems to be correct, the name is bringing back a lot of fond memories. Though kids are always excited about getting their hands on a sweet treat — he says it’s the parents who have had some of the best reactions to the ice cream bikes.

“The biggest response is honestly the big, burly dads that come flying out of the houses and know exactly what Dickie Dee is,” he said laughing. “Either they’ve ridden the bike when they were younger or they just miss the ice cream ... they’re running out of their houses and grabbing their kids — it’s just hilarious.”

Turner says they also love to head out to community events and support local charities. So, any event that could use more ice cream — or cotton candy, popcorn and candy — can book a bike to attend for free and for events supporting charities, Turner will donate a portion of the profits.

Though bylaws don’t allow food trucks to drive in residential neighbourhoods, the bikes don’t have that same problem so Turner says people can expect to see them pedalling through Saskatoon’s neighbourhoods very soon. But if you’re not a fan of waiting, you can check out the JT’s Tasty Treats social media page or Snack Map to find out where the bikes are at any given time.

When Christine Epp started Women’s Wellness Physiotherapy it was a way to educate and empower women about their own bodies and help them understand that having concerns with their pelvic floor was normal — and fixable.

When Epp started practicing in the specialized field of pelvic floor physiotherapy in 2002 she was one of only a handful in the city. Now, a lot more physiotherapists are taking the training, which she says is a positive shift.

Epp’s practice is located inside the YXE Women’s Health Clinic, which allows her patients the opportunity to take advantage of the clinic’s multidisciplinary approach to health care.

The concerns patients bring to Epp when booking an appointment for pelvic floor physiotherapy can vary greatly, she says. Some patients have issues dealing with pain in the back and pelvis, others with bladder and bowel control — or a lack thereof — and she also helps expectant and new mothers with strengthening their pelvic floor before and after childbirth.

But she says a problem she faces regularly in her line of work is that people don’t often speak about issues surrounding the pelvic floor even though many women face them.

“We are somewhat led to believe that these kinds of concerns are normal,” Epp said. “And I would say that these are very common problems ... but not everybody’s difficulties are the same, so doing kegels and not really understanding the particulars of your concern — it’s not as helpful as it can be if you could have an evaluation and get a plan.”

After meeting with Epp and finding out what your specific concerns are, she will create a program to continue at home — and she says her patients are thrilled with their results.

“What I’m excited about is creating that environment of change so women can become more aware that there is care available and that they can receive effective care earlier,” she said.
