ROUGHRIDERS’ REVENGE

Decisive win over Argos in opener

- MURRAY McCORMICK

Zach Collaros, Charleston Hughes, Nick Marshall and Brett Lauther enjoyed impressive debuts as members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday.

Collaros won his first start as the Roughriders’ quarterback and Hughes, a fellow CFL veteran, added three sacks in a 27-19 victory over the Toronto Argonauts before 29,788 spectators at Mosaic Stadium.

Marshall, playing in his first CFL game, added a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

Collaros snapped a personal 12game losing streak as a starter, dating back to 2015, as the Roughriders won a season opener for the first time since 2014.

Acquired from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in January, Collaros completed 18 of 25 passes for 205 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown toss to Naaman Roosevelt.

Lauther had four field goals in five attempts, connecting from 43, 45, 46 and 32 yards.

Toronto twice pared the deficit to five points in the fourth quarter but could not get any closer.

On the Roughriders’ final possession, Toronto was called for a passinterference penalty with 1:34 left. The Roughriders then consumed most of the time that remained before Lauther hit his final field goal.

The Riders play their next game Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Ottawa.
