Indigenous Peoples Day events open to everyone

Wanuskewin Heritage and Victoria parks host Rock Your Roots Walk, games, food

National Indigenous Peoples Day will be celebrated across Canada today. Events in Saskatoon are scheduled at Victoria Park and Wanuskewin Heritage Park.

Rock Your Roots Walk for Reconcilia­tion

Where: Victoria Park, Spadina Crescent West

Celebratio­ns begin at 7:30 a.m. with a pipe ceremony, open to everyone. At 10 a.m., the Rock Your Roots walk will begin at the top of Victoria Park. Organizers recommend arriving at the start line at 9:30 a.m. for a group warm-up exercise; participan­ts are also encouraged to wear or hold traditiona­l symbols of their culture during the walk.

Celebratio­ns will continue afterward in the park with guest speakers, a free lunch and live entertainm­ent, hosted by the Saska- toon Indian and Métis Friendship Centre.

National Indigenous Peoples Day at Wanuskewin Heritage Park

Where: Wanuskewin Heritage Park, RR #4 Penner Road

Visitors are encouraged to spend time at the various family-friendly stations which include games, activities, and other events.

Nike N7 will also have various activities and events on site. The Nike athletic wear company’s N7 fund donates money to sport and physical activity programs for Indigenous communitie­s.

Celebratio­ns will run from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
