About 10 months after asbestos was discovered during demolition of a house in the Mayfair neighbourhood, the city is set to resume the teardown.

The City of Saskatoon has scheduled demolition of the dilapidated house at the corner of Avenue B North and 34th Street West to restart next week.

The house has been left partly demolished since the asbestos was discovered last fall. A red metal fence was installed around the property with asbestos warnings attached to it.

The city assumed responsibility for the demolition of the house earlier this year and was expected to resume work once temperatures stayed consistently above freezing.

Then, in May, the city was forced to delay the demolition when the provincial Ministry of Occupational Health and Safety asked for more information about the work plan to ensure worker safety.

The city confirmed Tuesday the necessary approvals have been received for the demolition to resume.

Residents have complained about the delay in demolishing the house and expressed skepticism about assurances from the city and the province the situation does not represent a threat to safety.

Earlier this year, city council voted to reduce the time frame for residential demolitions to two months in response to the Mayfair situation.

The house is owned by 101052610 Saskatchewan Ltd.
