O’grady’s first ace helps him to 3rd spot
Braden O’grady was able to shoot par on every hole but one through the back nine Tuesday at the Saskatchewan junior men’s golf championship.
He wasn’t complaining, however.
That lone exception turned out to be a hole-in-one as O’grady aced Hole No. 17, which is No. 8 on the Moors course, at the Moon Lake Golf and Country Club.
It was the first hole-in-one for the 14-year-old golfer, who carded an even-par 72 Tuesday to sit tied for third in the Saskatchewan championship with first-round leader Connor Scissons of Saskatoon.
“It was exciting — I couldn’t really see it go in from the tee, but my mom had her arms in the air yelling ‘hole-in-one!’ ” said O’grady, an Edmonton native who finished tied for 23rd last week at the Alberta junior and juvenile boys golf championship at the Sundre Golf Club.
Saskatoon’s Josh Nagy leads the boys’ competition with a three-shot lead over fellow Saskatoon golfer Bradley Moser.
Nagy fired an impressive 4-under par 68, which would have been even better if not for a double-bogey seven on the final hole. His card included six birdies and 11 pars.
Nagy (76-68—144) is evenpar through the tournament, while Moser is 3-over (7671—147).
Moser shot a 1-under 71 Tuesday thanks to four birdies, 11 pars and three bogeys. His round included a 4-under 32 through the back nine Moors.
JUNIOR GIRLS
Deer Valley’s Carey Mclean leads the Saskatchewan provincial junior girls golf championship.
Mclean shot a 9-over 81 Tuesday.
Mclean leads Shell Lake’s Brooklin Fry (83-83—168) and Yorkton’s Ella Kozak (8878—168) by only one stroke. The 12-year-old Kozak was even-par through the back nine with five pars, two birds and two bogeys.
Fry, 13, entered this week’s event with three tournament titles under her belt, having captured the MJT series events this year at Moon Lake, North Battleford Golf and Country Club and Lloydminster Golf and Country Club.
She says the key has been “just focusing on every single shot and just thinking one shot at a time for the next one.”
This is her third season of competitive golf and her best one yet.
The Saskatchewan junior golf championships wrap up Wednesday afternoon at Moon Lake.
