Cleese leaving U.K. for Caribbean
John Cleese is leaving the U.K. for the Caribbean in November because he’s so “disappointed” with his home country. The Monty Python actor appeared on U.K. show Newsnight on Tuesday and revealed that he is making arrangements ahead of his move to the “gorgeous” Caribbean island Nevis toward the end of the year. The 78-year-old said he previously spent time there in January and February and his wife Jennifer “loves it,” so they were relocating because he is “so disappointed” with his native country. “I’m very disappointed with the way the country’s run, and my particular beef is with the newspapers,” he said, citing statistics on how little the public trust the written press in the U.K. compared to trust levels in other European countries. Cleese said he had tried to evoke press reform and changes to the voting system but had failed so he was going to “try somewhere else.”
