TAP INTO CRAFTING SPIRIT OR FIND TRUSTED STORES

- ERIN PETROW

It’s the perfect place to try your hand at something new and leave with a trendy piece of decor for your home — complete with bragging rights when the compliments on your new piece come rolling in.

Emily Hitz and Jen Schier have long histories as artisans and creators. Schier’s background is in art history and digital art and Hitz studied tapestry weaving in her home state of California. When it comes to planning projects for Craft School YXE they find inspiration in the art of ancient crafting — but add their modern twists.

“We aim to have our finger on the pulse of the best DIY projects and design trends that have a DIY element to them,” Hitz explains. “Although, they are all ancient crafts reinterpreted with a fresh look.”

If the consistently sold out classes say anything, it’s that people are loving the workshops and the items they create. Feedback has been so good that Hitz and Schier have plans to increase the amounts of classes — and crafts — they offer.

Currently, the emphasis is on fibre arts like macramé, though they do dabble in classes offering options like concrete accessories, paper marbling and more. Hitz says they are always open to suggestions and are happy to collaborate with other artisans to create fresh workshops and build more connections within Saskatoon’s artistic community.

Classes generally cater to beginners in a friendly, supportive environment and their goal is that each workshop leaves enough time for each student to finish the project so it’s ready for display as soon as you get home. “It’s very satisfying for us too,” Schier said. “To watch people use their hands and gain confidence in something they wouldn’t do on their own and just help to facilitate that.”

Unsure who to hire to fix your car, take care of your pets or manage your money? TrustedSaskatoon can help give you the answers to those queries and more with just a few clicks of a mouse.

When Sara Wheelwright first arrived in Saskatoon she was without a support system and felt stuck trying to find the city’s best stores and most reputable contractors.

She was able to transform that into a business to help others avoid all the pitfalls that she experienced when trying to find the best businesses at the right price.

“In 2006, the internet here wasn’t as good as it was in England and the only places I knew of were the big box stores,” she explained. “So I really struggled to fill my house, it went from exciting to a stress. I got ripped off a couple of times and had bad experiences and I just thought at that point it would have been great to have somewhere to go for newcomers to find those places that aren’t necessarily on the main drag.”

So in 2011 she launched TrustedSaskatoon — a website that does the background research on a company for the consumer to get exactly what they are looking for.

Since its launch, Wheelwright has grown the business in leaps and bounds, adding the sister site TrustedRegina and later an entire marketing agency to help the verified businesses expand their reach within the community by helping to create websites, managing social media and more. So what started for the consumer is now also helping local businesses grow and compete with bigger chain stores.

And with TrustedSaskatoon’s recent move into a new office space downtown, Wheelwright plans to continue to grow her business in a space that gives her employees more space to work, cuts down on their carbon footprint and keeps them in the heart of the city.

“For me as an immigrant who arrived here with lots of ideas and some hope ... that’s really neat that I’ve been able to come here and create jobs. Saskatoon’s been a great move for me, my family here is thriving and I wouldn’t be anywhere else.” TRUSTEDSASKATOON.COM Owner: Sara Wheelwright Address: 129 21st Street E. Unit 500
