$1.3M home up for grabs in hospital lottery fundraiser

- MATT OLSON

The $1.3-million house offered up for this year’s Hospital Home Lottery in Saskatoon is the grand prize for the organization’s 40th lottery fundraiser.

“We’ve raised over $33 million in the last 30 years that we’ve been doing this,” Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation CEO Steve Shannon said. “I love the excitement of discovering a new home.”

The impressive, 3,300-plus square foot home in the southeast corner of the city was opened to the media on Tuesday ahead of the public opening on Saturday. It’s equipped with four bedrooms, four bathrooms, five custom-built fireplaces, a huge lower-level wet bar, and comes with $50,000 in cash.

This is the 32nd year of the lottery in Saskatoon, but it’s the 40th lottery thanks to multiple events held in some recent years.

Shannon said the Hospital Home Lottery is the biggest hospital fundraiser in Saskatoon outside of private donations, and he’s always astounded by the new developments that end up in each home.

“You open the doors and you go, ‘I wonder what the features are going to be,’” he said. “All these little things that they build into it ... it’s really cool.”

Bruce Acton, CEO of St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation, said the money raised in the lottery will be used to purchase new “state of the art” equipment and support research programs at the three hospitals in the city.

The show home in Greenbryre isn’t the only prize up for grabs: this year’s early bird prize package is a cottage at Candle Lake along with a pontoon boat and $5,000 cash; the bonus prize is a choice of a 14-day excursion to the Galapagos Islands or $20,000 cash.

With a total limit of 44,000 tickets, Shannon said the lottery usually sells out very quickly.
