One year after he stepped down as president of the Humboldt Broncos, Jamie Brockman has been elected back to the position by the junior hockey team’s reconstituted board of directors.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team announced Brockman’s election on Wednesday, one day after former president Kevin Garinger said in an interview that he would not seek a second term.

“I have experience from my previous five years on the board that can and will help move this organization forward,” Brockman said in a prepared statement. He was reappointed to the team’s board earlier this month.

“I have a lot of confidence in our current board of directors because these people also want to help, so I feel I have a great support network, and look forward to moving the team forward.”

Brockman is joined on the team’s executive by vice-president Maury Simoneau, treasurer Curtis Wacker and secretary Lee Dufort, the team said Wednesday in a news release. Simoneau replaces Randy Maclean, who chose not to seek re-election. Wacker took over from Darrin Duell, who remains on the board but opted against a position on the executive.

Duell remains the head of the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Fund Inc., which controls almost $15 million raised online after the crash, and the Humboldt Strong Community Foundation.

Sixteen people were killed and another 13 were injured on April 6 when the team’s bus collided with a semi at an intersection. Garinger became the public face of the team in the hours and days after the crash. In an interview on Tuesday, Garinger said he chose to step down to concentrate on his job and his family.

“I want to express my extreme gratitude to the past board of directors along with the executive from last year for stepping up the way they did,” Brockman said.
