Huskies on even form after splitting soccer games

-

A win on Saturday and a loss on Sunday have the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s soccer team off to an even start for the 2018-19 Canada West season.

On Saturday, in their first game of the season, three goals in the second half — including a back-toback pair by Tobi Ojo — propelled the Huskies to a 4-2 win over the host University of Calgary Dinos.

Dominik Zuczek put the Dinos on the board first in the 27th minute, but Gabriel Butois scored in the 34th for the Dogs, to make the score 1-1 at halftime.

Calgary managed to once again pull ahead for a short time as Leonardo Culina scored a goal in the 53rd minute, but it was all Huskies after that.

In the 58th minute, Tyler Redl scored to tie the game, and then Ojo scored in the 74th to give Saskatchewan the go-ahead goal and then again in the 83rd to secure the victory for his team.

Huskies’ goalkeeper Greg Buckley made eight saves on 10 shots for the Huskies, while Jake Ruschkowski of the Dinos stopped four of eight.

On Sunday, the hometown Mount Royal University Cougars managed a 3-2 victory over the Huskies after getting out to an early lead in the first half.

A pair of goals by the Cougars — one by Tysen Chatani in the 17th minute, and another by Branden Canejo in the 27th minute — put the Huskies at an early deficit, but Redl was able to close the gap to one with his first goal of the game in the 31st minute.

Unfortunately for Saskatchewan, the Cougars added another goal in the 52nd minute to increase their lead to two. Redl narrowed the lead again in the 86th minute with another goal, but the Huskies weren’t able to complete the comeback.

Buckley made three saves on six shots, while Kyran Valley stopped two of four for the Cougars.
