After minor roles on the New York stage, Robert Redford’s first starring role came on Broadway in 1963 in Barefoot in the Park, as a newlywed stuffy lawyer opposite Elizabeth Ashley.

After small and growing TV roles, he reprised the Barefoot role on film with Jane Fonda in 1967. His breakout role came in 1969 as a bank robber opposite Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Redford has also been active as a director, including Ordinary People (1980), The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), Quiz Show (1994) and The Company You Keep (2012).

Redford has won six Golden Globe Awards and was nominated four other times.

He won an Oscar (for directing Ordinary People) and was nominated as best actor for The Sting. He was nominated as best director for Quiz Show, which was also nominated as best picture.

In 2002, he was given an honorary Oscar for his work in creating the Sundance Institute and its film festival, and for his efforts to support independen­t film.
