PHOTO CONTEST
Photography contest entries capture unique images of sunny season’s best sights
The Saskatoon StarPhoenix and Regina Leader-Post are proud to present the winner of our summer photo contest. Dale Boan’s Dinner Interrupted, which shows an otter with a fish, has been awarded the grand prize. For more on this photo, and to see some of the other excellent entries, check out the Weekend section in today’s edition.
When it comes to summer, the people of Saskatchewan seem to have a special appreciation for the season.
This was proved true through the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and Regina Leader-Post’s Saskatchewan Summer Photo Contest.
Out of more than 100 entries, judges picked Dinner Interrupted by Saskatoon photographer Dale Boan as the winner.
Leader-Post photographer and judge Brandon Harder explains why this image got the nod from our visual storytellers: “The firstplace entry captures a Saskatchewan scene that many will never witness, outside of the photograph. It represents the harmony of technical knowledge, patience, dedication and some old-fashioned good luck. The otter alone would’ve been a strong image, but the fish tells the story.”
Tara Lefebvre, also of Saskatoon, was second and Moorea Ottenbreit of Regina was third.
These photos and the images that earned honourable mentions are on display on these pages.
Sponsors of the contest were Don’s Photo and Suncoast Enclosures. Top prize is $500 cash, the second-place prize is $250 cash and the third-place prize is $100 cash.
Dale Boan, Dinner Interrupted, first place: Our grand prize winner describes how this beautiful moment in the wild was captured.
“I was in Prince Albert National Park with a group photography friends. As we drove along the lake shore road, I fell way behind the group. Cresting a small hill I was shocked to see an otter on the side of the road.
“While I stopped and grabbed my camera, it crawled off the road into a stream. Through my camera, I could see it was towing a large northern pike.
“Quietly following it down the stream, to the lake, I eventually found it dining at the water’s edge.” Tara Lefebvre, Crazy Daisies,
second place: Nestled in the canoe, waiting for the fireworks to start at Diefenbaker Lake, a familiar dinnerware pattern takes centre stage. Moorea Ottenbreit, Morning Dew, third place: On a calm summer day, the wheat stood still as the sun welcomed the morning with her warmth.
Donna Boyle, Loon and Chick: Common Loon and her day-old hatchling take to the water.
Hamilton Fast, Casting Light: Finding time to fish after a day of canoeing in Northern Saskatchewan. Morgana Carter, Dust: This photo was taken on one of the hottest days of the summer. Casper Gilev (the model) had found this abandoned building near her friend’s property outside of Saskatoon. After a few hours of shooting she and the photographer decided to pack up, but as they were leaving they decided to get one last photo in of the rusted swing set. Casper put on a red party dress she had stored in her car and the pair went back out, tired and delirious from the heat. It was worth it, as this was the resulting image.
Ches Ruston, Morning Mist: A foggy summer morning looking out over the South Saskatchewan River from the Sky Trail in Outlook, Sask.
James Davis, Serenity Green of the North: An image of one of Saskatchewan’s many small lakes. Located in the Porcupine Forest, it’s a great fishing spot.
Thomas Dingwall, After Glow: “I took my Rebel XTi down to the riverbank to shoot long exposures of the cityscape and the Remai Modern Art Gallery. Although the scene is calming in itself, I decided then to liven it up with light paint to outline the rocks and the shore line.”
