Police lift car off pinned man after collision

-

A 22-year-old man was taken to hospital with injuries that are considered life threatening and a 21-year-old woman is facing impaired driving charges after a man was pinned under a vehicle early Monday morning.

Saskatoon police say just before 3 a.m., officers responded to a “frantic 911 call” on the 400 block of Confederation Drive.

When police arrived, they located a man pinned underneath a vehicle.

Approximately nine patrol officers worked to lift the vehicle off the injured man, and were able to keep it off him until members of the Saskatoon Fire Department arrived.

On Monday, acting Staff Sgt. Tonya Gresty explained when officers arrived they found the 22-year-old pinned under the rear of the vehicle, noting he was having difficulty breathing.

The first group of officers then lifted up the car, relieving some pressure, and as more officers arrived, they managed to lift the car off the man so he could breathe.

“They held it up for almost two minutes by the time fire got there and was able to get it up a little higher and get him out from underneath,” Gresty said.

Saskatoon police Chief Troy Cooper expressed his gratitude for the work his officers do in a Labour Day post from his Twitter account.

“I am pleased to celebrate the incredible team @Saskatoonpolice that are working hard to keep us safe,” he said in the Tweet. “Some heroic moments this weekend by the women and men on the street and in our communications section. Thanks for all that you do!”

A 21-year-old woman was arrested at the scene. She now faces charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm and driving with a blood alcohol limit exceeding .08. The man was taken to hospital for treatment by Medavie Health Services West.
