Broncos player Gobeil recovering from ‘significant brain injury’

-

Humboldt Broncos player Morgan Gobeil is continuing his recovery — though remains unaware of the extent of what happened after the April 6 bus crash that killed 16 and injured 13 more.

According to a statement released by Gobeil’s family Monday, he is expected to remain in the hospital for a few more months as he continues his recovery from a “significant brain injury.”

They say Gobeil, a Humboldt native, is focusing on rehabilitation through speech, occupational and physio therapies. Although the past months of recovery have been difficult, they say it has been “remarkable” watching his progress.

“He is a tough kid, and he is using all that determination that made him successful in both sports and academics to keep moving forward . ... We also know his journey is a long one,” the statement read.

His family also says Gobeil is aware that he was injured in a bus crash on the way to a game in Nipawin, though he remains unaware of the full extent of the crash and the worldwide support that flooded in afterwards.

In the statement, his family thanked first responders, STARS air ambulance, hospital workers in Nipawin, Tisdale and Saskatoon, the Ronald Mcdonald House along with everyone who kept Gobeil in their thoughts and prayers.

“The support we have received has been unbelievable and we are forever grateful. We wanted to say a special thank-you to the staff who volunteered to help Morgan attend his big brother’s wedding this summer, giving us the chance to be a family again outside of the hospital,” the statement said.

“Our community, friends and the support of the whole world has made all the difference.”
